Does this involve a totally different set of muscles? Is it polite to ask a woman to slam the door for you?!

Cause slamming a door involves anger. They usually lack the hand strength for the jar, but can swing the whole body into slamming door. Tell her why you want her to slam your door first.

You must have missed that 70s show episode (Donna beats Eric at basketball/games)......it's about making a man feel like a man and appreciated.

Of course we can open pickle jars, but if the man is around (and he really can do it much "easier") then why not make him feel needed?

So yes, it should be polite to ask a woman to slam the door for you, if we can do it easier.....especially when holding something. Plus I can close a door with my buttocks or foot; I can't do that with a pickle jar (ewww)

EDIT: what's with all the anger? I just tell him I'm angry and why....I don't need to throw a tantrum.

This is a physical and social phenomenon that has been observed and studied for years. The twisting motion involved in opening jars requires considerable hand and lower arm strength, and women have been shown to be somewhat less physically capable in this particular area than most men. Slamming doors is a different matter. Nearly everyone, even children, have the strength to slam a door. But, unlike a pickle jar, there is more involved than just strength. Emotions can play a significant part in the act of slamming a door. Women have found that they may effectively use the shutting of a door as a means of displaying emotion. When they are upset, typically at a man, and the opportunity presents itself, they will slam a door to show their displeasure. It has been this way for centuries, and is unlikely to change. I hope this helps.

Because force and velocity are two different things, thus they are created and carried out by two different manipulations.

And sir, I, a woman, can open my own pickle jars, thank you. I may not always have the strength to do so, but those extra dense neurons and more white matter in my brain think up an alternative solution...I pry a knife under the lid to let out the air until the top pops..then voila, its open. Brain always wins over brawn. =]

Now, if I can do this, you can slam your own door...though it would be funny to have someone else express your anger for you.

Haha! Lots of women can open pickle jars, but I think that it requires the muscles in your forearms and hands. And women probably just slam doors a lot because it's expressive and they're running on adrenaline. Also, I don't think it is a matter of etiquette, but a matter of strange questions.

I can open pickle jars quite easily and I am a woman. The difference is that I don't wear a lot of jewelry on my hands and I don't have long polished fingernails so I get to develop the muscles in my hands. That's because I don't have to worry about ruining nail jobs or if the jewelry is going to be damaged or get in the way.

Oh Ronnie, Ronnie, Ronnie. You have yet to learn that the many mysteries of women are not to be understood ;).

Okay, seriously. We need help with pickle jars because men have much stronger hand and wrist muscles than women and those are the muscles involved in the pickle jar problem. (I've said for years that the 2 most important things a man is good for are opening pickle jars and killing spiders).

Car doors? It takes those long muscles in the upper and lower arms, and I would think men have more powerful arms than women. So.........who knows? I wouldn't hesitate for a moment to ask a woman to slam a door for you....just make sure you return the favor, next time she is in the mood for a kosher dill.

I think it has something to do with the grip of the hand. You probably get more practice than women so it is easier for you to be able to open jars.
As for slamming doors? It's all in the wrist movement.

Here in New York, women can open any jar and we will gladly slam your pickle in the car door if you disrespect us.

Adrenaline can cause a person a temporary increase in strength. When you're angry (and I'm assuming if you're slamming doors, you're angry)-- your adrenaline levels increase...the angrier you are, the more adrenaline you have in your bloodstream. Opening pickle jars doesn't involve the same bio-chemical changes in the body, unless you're an angry person opening a pickle jar....lol!
