My guess and only a guess is, -
They haven't found a body or the child or need more events!
Innocent until proven guilty. ;-)
(This so much reminds me of the Jon Bonet Ramsey case.
Referring to, "Who done it?" )

There isn't evidence to say they did it.
The police say that they sedated the children and accidently killed Madeline - 1, how could a doctor get that wrong on her own child? 2, so where did the blood come from?
The police are also saying that the child was killed and a month later bundled into the rental car - 1, so how on earth did the parents do it with all the media there, 2, how did blood get splashed in the car, a dead body that old does not 'splash'.
Also the police are saying that the parents killed her, and then enjoyed dinner with seven other people with nobody suspecting anything was wrong?
Now think of the reasons why the portugese police have reasons to blame the McCanns - think of the terrible press about the police over there, how they have completely ruined the whole investigation by there poor detective work. A week ago a family from England went to portugal 30 miles away from where madeline was kidnapped and there was a guy photographing and following their two young daughters around, they called the police and the police advised them to 'ignore it and just keep an eye on the children' they did nothing!!!
If you let the McCanns get charged then there is a paedophile on the loose and more kids will get hurt.

This ain't an episode of The Bill, FFS.
They obviously want all the evidence in - including the body (if there is one) before they charge them.
I seem to be the only Brit who thinks the Portuguese have done a good job, in unique circumstances.

At very least they should be charged with child neglect.
If a single mum sedated her child to go out on the lash in a foreign country leaving the door unlocked, she would have been hung drawn and quartered by the media.
Throw the book at them

The police in Portugal are still waiting for more DNA results from the UK police. Once they have got that, then you will see even more action on them both. At least the first steps have been made by the Portuguese police by making them Formal Suspects.

It said on Sky News that it could be a while before they're actually charged. The Police still need to get their evidence together. It's not gonna be anytime soon I don't think.

At leas one of the DNA samples that was taken was s weak thet the British labs couldn't handle it. This poor sample has now been sent to the USA for analysis.
Which to me indicates that with the evidence they have so far, it is not enoug to make a case against anyone.

Becuase they didn't murder their child.
The Portuguese police have been known for not actually doing their jobs well, and many people suspect that the police have only pretended to suspected them with weak evidence that has not been certified by the British authorities... Just because they don't want to live with a reputation of a service which cannot solve a case of stolen child.
Disgusting.
I do not think a loving family who has been in that much public grief could actually do that do a child.

They might need more time to go back over their answers, they might be examining other evidence or may need more evidence, but they can still be charged or made to stay in the country. Things seem to be stepping up a gear.

Lack of evidence? Before any charges are made, the Portuguese police are going to have a rock solid case.

Read the link that Little weed posted. It explains it all. It is not up to the PJ to charge them. They just present the evidence to a magistrate and the magistrate will make the decision to charge or not.
