The Israelites were a Semitic tribe named after Israel, the eldest son of Jacob. There were other lesser tribes named after the other sons, which came to be known as the 12 tribes of Israel. Jacob stole the birthright from his elder brother Esau.
There's a pattern emerging here!
Present day Israel, which geographically has little in common with the 'Promised Land' was created, mainly by the British and the USA after the Holocaust as a homeland for displaced Jews. I sometimes wonder just how Semitic today's Israelis are.

Israelite are the citizens of the Kingdom of Israel before the they were persecuted by Christian nations. Later when they were in exile from the Holy Roman Empire, they were forced to migrate to other countries were they retained their religion but not their nationality. in 1949, after gaining military strength most of those who survived WWII returned to Palestine to recover and re-establish Israel. Thus the name Israeli was born.

The state of Israel started off as a nonreligious state;Witness the lack of Religious enthusiasm of it's leaders.None of them are Solomon's or a King David.Occasionally you can find very wicked Israeli's like the evil Kings in the book of Kings, but I can't say that Israel's politicians are outstandingly good or outstandingly bad. However being a young country they are all patriotic to the point of jingoism.

Maybe Isaelites is more of in a historial sense while the Israelis indicate the modern state and people within it. Which brings another question, can or should an Arab, American, German or anyone else of foriegn extraction be termed an Israili?

Language changes over time. Israelite was the 16th century English word for "a person of or from Israel."
And "England" itself is a modern version of "Angle-land."
