White eggs have been in high demand in much of the US. THe White Leghorn chicken is a hihgly prolific egg layer that starts laying eggs at 19 weeks and lays eggs for a year. They are small and eat less feed and have better chances of surviaval than many chickens. Less feed and more eggs in demand by the public means a larger profit. Brown eggs are favored in much of the Northeast and are available in most stores antionwide. In Texas brown eggs sell for a premium price. They cost more to produce and people are willing to pay more becasue thugh most want white eggs others will pay more for the rich brown color of the shell. The egg is the same if feed is the same and egg feshness the same. On the farm chickens of different breeds lay different sizes and colors of eggs.

Different breeds of chicken lay different coloured eggs. The colour of the shell makes no difference whatsoever to the contents. Whether you find brown, white or beige eggs in the supermarket depends on what is popular. In Australia you won't find white eggs in supermarkets, everyone buys brown eggs. A friend of mine has lots of chickens of many different breeds and he has some which lay beautiful green eggs from pale green to olive greeen. The green eggs have exactly the same nutritional value and flavour as brown or white eggs.

Where did you get that idea? Unfortunately, Americans at one time were led to believe "white" eggs were "better". As a result, most American shoppers have seldom seen a brown or, for that matter, a green (duck) egg. The color of the shell reflects the breed of hen. Nowadays, most stores do sell a small amount of brown eggs.

Different types or breeds of chickens lay either white or brown eggs. In much of the US, the most popular breeds lay white. However, many grocery stores routinely carry brown eggs, and some health-conscious people believe they contain more nutrients. (They don't.)
When I lived in Boston, there was a TV and radio jingle, "Brown eggs are local eggs, and local eggs are fresh," because in that area, the chickens that thrived best laid brown eggs.

I always buy brown eggs and the store always has a selection of them. They are about .20 cents cheaper. I live in the North East of the US.
There used to be a commercial on TV with a little jingle:
"brown eggs are local eggs and local eggs are FRESH!"

the color of the shell is determined by the breed of chicken. Here in the Boston Area most of the eggs sold are brown with white ones showing up at easter for coloring

i go to my chicken pen and pick up the eggs and the colors are white, brown, green and as they say depends on the breed of chicken.
I personally hate store bought eggs as they tend to go bad to soon, and have always raised my own.
the green ones are cholesterol free. and they can come in blue & yellow too.
my son loved it when he was little cause he said it was like easter eggs all the time.
