The bigger the company, the bigger the target. I worked in retail management for years. The conditions at WalMart are not any different than what you would find at any other retail chain.
Retail by definition is low skilled and low pay. A company isn't going to spend a fortune on benefits for a low paid, high turnover workforce. It just isn't good business sense.

My last retail management job was for a big box style store. All but 2 of our associates were part time because we were not permitted to hire full time associates without district manager approval. None of them made more than $8/hour and their hours and schedules fluctuated weekly based on what the scheduling computer predicted our sales would be. There wasn't any form of an employee discount until 2 years ago. This is the kind of stuff WalMart gets bashed for but is common in the entire retail industry.

Higher pay and benefits come with higher skills and education. Companies will pay what the job is worth, not what you think you need to live like a rock star.

I have no problem shopping at WalMart.

I hate it. They treat the employees like crap- I worked for them for about 5 years and trust me- it is a bad place to work- they make it "seem" fun at first, but then you get sucked in.
I got hurt- run over by a forklift- and had to finish that shift and then come back the next day- note my legs were black and blue and swollen, but I had to go back in and work my 12 hour shift. Many times people would break fingers, feet, toes, legs etc and be forced to stay and "answer" questions and then be required to come back the next day and work.
Also our schedules were 4am until- this could mean until 3am the next morning. But you were required to be back at work @ 4am to work until again. Many days we slept in the car and in the conference room for 2 hours to come back and start all over again!!!!
For those that don't believe me, work there for a while-

For all the horror tales of how poorly Walmart treats their employees, when they build a new store, there's a long line waiting to put in applications.
