The last you hear of it is when she writes the article for the Quibbler, then it's never addressed again, as if it never happened. Rita goes and writes again. What happened?

Essentially the deal is that Hermione calls it even for her writing that Quibbler article. That gets Harry's story out to the public, so Rita is let off the hook and returns to work.

Well, Rita has swore not to write any dirt again, and she hasn't, because Hermione will tell her secret...
so we know she's not that lair and attention seeker reporter like she used to be, but there's no reason she's not a regular reporter...
after all, it's ok for Hermione or Harry if she's writing stuff as long as they're not false...
she wrote the ugly book about Dumbledore because she knew Hermione won't be able to blow her cover because she (Hermione) was on the run.

Now that Dumbledore is dead and Harry, Ron and Hermoine on the run I quess she felt she had nothing to fear from the pro-Dumbledore crowd adn Lord V and his gang welcomed anything that would but them (Pro-d) in the bad light .

rita never did, the dumbledore thing was a book so it was technically not breaking the rules.
