Is this normal for new pads? Do they need to be bedded in for awhile, or did the mechanic screw something up?

Brake "run-in" usualy only takes several stops if the mechanic didn't take the car for a drive and run-in the brakes himself.

You could do it if you like.

Get going around 30 mph and press down on the brake pedal and increase the gas to maintain 30 MPH (or there abouts) for about 10 seconds.

Now drive normaly for a few minutes to alow the brakes to cool.

Repeat this again.

That should take care of the run-in process and burn of the brake pad preservative and assembly residue.

If you continue to have problems after a day or so, take it back to the mechanic and ask him to double check his work and maybe take your car for a test drive.

Did the mechanic turn your rotors? (Machine surfaces) If brake rotors were turned and the cutting blades were not sharp, they have torn the metal out instead of cutting smoothly and this will cars a definite humming noise whebn brakes are applied. Burning smell is from brake pad material burning off pads. Take back to mechanic and tell him to test drive. Noise will not go away with pads seating in. Brake rotors will have to be machined again. Make sure not too much material is removed to make rotors unsafe. There are minimum specs on rotor thickness

Sometimes it is the material, they might wear in.... they might not if they are cheap pads..... I put on cheap pads once and they blew out black smoke dust daily.... I could kick myself in the but for going the cheap route that time.....
