Wikipedia has a good article on this event (see reference). To sum things up:

1765 - 1767: Britain begans eforcing taxes on the colonies and cracks down on smuggling, leading John Hancock to organize a boycott against tea, a product he had been smuggling.

May,10th, 1773: Britain passes the Tea Act, exempting the British East India Company from British taxes. This enabled the BEIC to sell tea at incredibly low prices in order to break an immensely successful boycott.

November, 1773: The HMS Dartmouth, the first ship carrying the duty-free tea, arrives in Boston Harbor amid protest by the Sons of Liberty.

December 16, 1773: The night before three ships with cargoes of tea are to be offloaded, The Sons of Liberty, disguised as Mohawk Indians, dump 45 tons of tea into the harbor.

1774: Parliament passes the Intolerable Acts in an attempt to control the colonists, but it backfired; the colonists were so angered that their level of disobedience increased and the seeds of the Revolution were sown.
