Whats the most effective way to build a cardboard kayak? I'm asking this because its a project in my science class and we have to race them across a shallow pond and make it so we don't sink.... anyhow... I also have to build a prototype and its due Monday. I have to build it out of Poster-board and clear tape. It must be able to hold about 450 grams for me to get all possible points... Help me please :D

What are the constraints? Since you know the weight of the cargo, you know how much water you need to displace. Avoid seams below the waterline. Allow enough freeboard above the waterline so waves don't get in. If you can get that fancy, try a catamaran design for speed and stability.

The first thing I'd do is use a lot of folds so that you can keep the structure, and I'd probably try to fold it down the middle as well to make the keel. you didn't say how much posterboard you can use and what fastening materials you need, but if I were folding a kayak, I'd probably start with a lengthwise fold down the middle, then fold each side so the outer edge was just past the middle (keel) fold. This would give you three layers at the keel, and two layers for the hull. The tricky part is to fold the bow and stern so that they a) overlap enough to disallow much water to get in, and b) actually have some kind of pointy shape to them. I actually just folded a prototype out of an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet - good way to model before you actually try this!

form the poster board into a vee, like a boat, make a brace across the middle, tape the ends coat it with a clear paint spray, outside and inside, let dry and coat it 2 or 3 more times,
