Because people feel better about themselves when being lied to. No matter how bad the lie they like it far more than knowing the truth. An obese person doesn't want to hear than they're obese. Same with a complete moron, a bad parent, a greedy selfish individual, someone stuck up and so on.

Because the truth hurts. Most people do not acknowledge the truth because the don't want to find wrong within themselves. However if people would look at it differently they would see that the wrongs in their lives, which have been manifested will help them to become better people. Both socially and personally.
