What does it mean when a college football player is called a "true freshman?"

Whenever a team has a lot of good players at one position, they may "Redshirt" a freshman player, so that way they can use him more in the future. For example, if Notre Dame still had Brady Quinn this year as a senior, and Jimmy Clausen as a freshman, they would want to redshirt Clausen. If they did, Brady Quinn would graduate and leave after that year, and then the next year, Clausen would still be considered a freshman, allowing him to play 4 more years, instead of only 3 if he wasn't redshirted. A true freshman is a freshman player that doesn't sit his first year due to redshirting.

Basically, it means he's not redshirted...which means he's actually a freshman at the school...A redshirt freshman basically means he's a freshman on the football team, with 4 years of eligibilty, while he is actually a sophomore student at the school...

Any athletes in his first year of college playing right away rather than being redshirted for several purposes.

this means that hes not readshirted or in other words hes not sat down so that the coaches can get a nother year out of the player. its his first year out of high school

it means he wasnt redshirted so its his first season at teh school
