I would say that your dispute lies with the newspaper and not the judge, unless the judge wrote the news item himself, which is unlikely.

I might not like it at all and then again I might depending on the nature of the posting.

For example it is legal and actually required in many states that if there are certain legal matters requiring public notice that the names including names of minors be published. Examples of this would be petitions on behalf of the child(ren) for name change, termination of guardianshp or parental rights, petition for adoption, certain property matters if the child is the owner of record in foreclosed property, matters of estate settlement. Some of these apply especially if for example there is no other way but publication to serve notice for example notice to John Smith the putative father of Joan Jones born 1/1/200 whose exact whereabouts are unknown and whose last known adddress was in the county where the notice is being published. If they had an address for John they might send him a letter but if they don't have one before they take away his rights to his kid they try this way.

Something similar would be true re: money or property confiscated in a drug bust for ex where publication must be made includingbthe mname of the alledged owner of the property as a part of confiscation process in many places.

In many places the names of juvenile sex offenders are also made public. In others they are not.

A child who is being tried as an adult for ex a 15 yr old tried for felony murder will also be treated by the court as an adult in matetrs of publication of inditements etc. in most jurisdictions.

A child's name might also be put in the paper by a judge for some award or good thing but you probably would not be complaining about that.

If it is something other than these sorts of thing you moght want to talk with a lawyer (free consultation) and see if you have a case to sue the judge or the court or the paper. If the lawyer sees it as a winable case he or she may take it on contingency which means the lawyer gets paid only if they get money for you or your child.

The JUDGE did not print ANYTHING in the paper. The PAPER did. In most areas it is customary to withhold the names of minors, but I have yet to see anyone produce an actual law to that effect. The editor in a previous answer stated they were not allowed, but did not say if that was a corporate policy or a law. It is likely he doesn't know.

If your kids broke the law, I say let the judge post their names. Since parents don't seem to accept that their children aren't angels anymore, someone's got to discipline them. Maybe a little embarassment will save them before they really do something seriously wrong.

I wouldn't like it at all. I would be disappointed. But I would be MORE disappointed that my children's names were in there because of illegal activity. You're putting the cart before the horse....the more serious issue here is that those "children" got in trouble. Do the crime - do the time (face public humiliation!!!)

I would be very upset and look to sue the judge and also make sure he lost office the next time he ran for election.

It is illegal to disclose a minors name publicly. Contact the county clerks or justice of the peace and talk to them. You can even file charges against the newspaper for disclosing the information of a minor.
