Great idea! Isn't it surprising that we Indians can vote to change governments but cant correct anomalies in transportation systems ? We thrash thieves, goondas, protest for and against reservation policies, take govts to courts.... yet- cannot insist upon the RTOs to tackle this issue ! Are not WE apathetic ?
How is it that in Mumbai, the autos and taxis strictly run by the meter ?
Therefore, my friend, the need of the hour is not to fix pictures of gods on the meters, but to raise awareness, complain in writing to the RTOs, file Public Interest Litigation with the Courts, talk to the local political representatives, Transport Ministry... have TV campaigns... all these and much more to erase this menace. Afterall, it is your city. This you can do for the peace and welfare of all people. My best wishes with you.

It is the curse for Chennai. They will not have good working meters. even if the meter is there it is manipulated (by a spcialied process called "Heating" for which Chennai fellows are very notoriouos) . They will not put the meters. The will show you the Madras city and loot you. All the auto fellows are cheats-

Now you have a good guestion - to fix pictures of God and pray and make puja for that. You do not know another thing In Madras all persons are fake ATHEISTS - They have to act as atheist but all will be, including 'KARUNANIDIH' WILL BE USING YELLOW TOWELS AND PRAYING GOD.LOL. But if you pray they will scold you.

Best thing do not go by auto Rickshaws-

Though it was in humour you have a point here. Looking at the problem, I think our apathy is the reason why this happens. If we put our foot down and refuse to use autos that dont charge by meter (we includes every single consumer) it would work, but it is a very very big ask. Who has the time to change things, everyone is busy in this world. So this continues. Let us resolve to make things by taking responsibility for things instead of thinking, what difference me alone can make to the situation. Let it begin at home.

NB: Chennai Autos not only run based on arbitrary (definitely exorbitant) charges but cops are party to this loot too. They are so arrogant, we citizens were very happy when they went on strike and remained off the roads :-)

Chennai is supposed to be one of the largest cosmopolitan cities of India and it is a shame to see autorickshaw drivers fleecing innocent commuters in a city like Chennai.

Actually in very few cities Auto meters are used like Taxi meters. Its failure of all the tranport and traffic departments or our country, however beneficial for the traffic police.
