I dont want to sound like a smartass, but did you close the lid? If so, it could be a problem with the lid switch. Does the washer make any noise when it's time to agitate? If so the clutch or transmission (yes, washing machines have a clutch and transmission) may be bad. No noise when it's time to agitate may be caused by a bad motor. Turn the dial to make the washer pump out the water and see if it will spin them. If not, it's definately the motor. You're gonna have to call a repairman anyway because there is nothing you can do for it>

Do you hear the motor run or hum at all? If it does, it could just be a broken or worn out belt or possibly something wrong with the transmission. Take a flashlight and try to look under the washer...if there's lots of little black rubber chunks or debris underneath, the belt is shot. If no motor noise, it could be a bad motor, timer or possibly wiring. Probably better off getting a new one if it's 6-7 years or older. A good thing to get is a Sears home warranty that covers all appliances and devices in the house--- no matter what brand, they'll fix or replace.

It could be a bad gear box or control panel. In the long run, it will probably be cheaper to have a pro look at it and advise you whether to replace or repair the machine.
