I work for a campus newspaper, and whenever I can I ask permission from music artists/recording companies to use pictures from their websites, and they often have a 'media' section that I can access. Once in awhile though, they do not have a media section, and I can't get ahold of them. (Especially when dealing with really popular artists.)

What are the copyright laws about taking pictures from, for example, Google Images and using them in my publication?

I don't know if this would fall under 'Fair Use' or not. I do know the law is the same if your source is the Internet as if your source is a printed book or magazine.

If you're using them for a newspaper article, you should be covered under the fair use provision... just make sure you list the source of the picture and give proper credit.
