The Rangers have already shown their card as to what they wish to do. The answer is they will keep Lundqvist and trade Montoya. Lundqvist is an awesome goaltender and the Rangers have realized that. They also know Montoya is a great goalie but with Lundqvist starting to reach his potential and only a few years older than Montoya, they now have trade bait to use to fill up other holes in their lineup. Furthermore, Lundqvist has shown he can handle the pace and skill of the NHL level already while Montoya has not. And the icing on the cake to Lundqvist over Montoya? The Rangers drafted top goalie prospect Antoine Lafleur a few months ago in the 2007 NHL draft.

Excellent question and tough to say until Montoya proves he is ready for not only the NHL but the bright lights and scrutiny of being a goalie in NY. I happen to think he is the better of the 2 overall but what a good problem to have. The deciding factor may be trade value with Lundqvist....they need to put a better defensive squad (and this includes forwards, they have more than one lazy defensive forward) on the ice to put Montoya in the best position to have early success. If Lundqvist could bring a couple of defensemen and/or a proven 2 way forward in a deal then it might be time to pass the torch and get the team to the next level. I think there are a couple of teams that could swing a deal like that so the Rangers have some interesting decisions to mak. Keeping both likely isnt a great solution, Montoya would be better off without looking over his shoulder at another relatively young goalie who has had success and having an older established backup to mentor him willingly would be better for his development. No split lockerroom(half loyal to Lundqvist/half liking Montoya) this way plus a nice influx of talent in a trade....might be the fastest way to legitiment Cup contention.

Lundqvist isn't going anywhere. If Montoya wins the backup job in camp, he'll get into some games and might even get showcased as a setup for a trade.
Either way, barring injury, Lundqvist is the team's keeper and will carry the load for the Rangers for the forseeable future. As such, all other goaltending decisions will be driven off that primary premise.

Sather feels Lundqvist is better than Montoya and has been actively trying to move him for the last 6 months. His asking price is high, but the fact that teams are still talking to him suggests that there are interested teams.

I'd keep Lundqvist as the #1 until he either loses to Montoya the way Theodore did to Budaj or puts a strangle hold on it like Nabokov did in San Jose, forcing the Toskala trade.

Lundqvist is one of the best young goalies in the NHL right now. There is no way you trade him, unless it's for something outrageous like Crosby or Ovechkin. You keep him happy and you keep him signed (before other teams can give him offer sheets to try to pry him away).
As for Montoya, there is a similar situation going on in Vancouver. Corey Schnieder could be in the NHL, but Luongo is holding down the starting job in Vancouver. What Nonis has chosen to do is hang on to him for the time being. I'd agree with that move for sure. You never know if you might need him to be your starter in the future; nothing is for certain in the NHL. If I was GM of the Rangers, I'd hold on to Montoya and wait until he's ready for the NHL. There is always a high demand for goalies; just look at what San Jose got for Toskala-mid first rounder, second rounder, fourth rounder, and, most importantly, the unloading of a 3.5 million dollar cancer in Mark Bell. Granted, not all NHL teams are as stupid and badly managed as the Laffs, but you get the idea.

I would go with Montoya. The only thing that Henrik has show me was he could win a gold medal. He is overrated and the organization would rather shell out all their money on 2 players(Gomez, drury) then give it to someone that has earned his spot. I feel bad for him this year the Rangers defense is going to be horrible.
