The other day someone mentioned to me in front of my girls that they looked thinner than they should be, I have always been naturaly thin and so have they, the doctor has checked them and they are healthy, anyways after the person left my 9 year old came to me and whispered "mom I don't want to be fat" is that a sign she could be deveveloping body weight issues?

i grew up with an eating disorder.. i would say the best thing you can do is to teach your child what a healthy weight is for her frame. and teach her healthy ways to eat. if she is raised eating the right foods and not junk all the time she will learn to take care of her body and be a healthy weight and not starve herself. i wouldnt push the subject either. she is naturally thing and dr says she is healthy just talk to her about proper nutrition without an enphasis on her weight or habits.

I think she is reacting to what society has given her and shows her daily. There is the image of this rail thin woman everywhere she looks and that is what society says is acceptable so that is what she thinks she should be too.

I'm not saying it is good to be fat (I'm over weight) but our children need to be taught that just because a person is large doesn't mean that they are any different than others.

As long as you guide her in the right decisions she will be just fine. Try talking to her about it and be honest with her. You don't want her to be fat either but if she was you would still love her and isn't that what really matters?
