The check can be severely damaged and still be cashed as long as certain information is legible. The required information is as follows:
1. The bank on which it is drawn. This can be the bank name OR the routing number (9 digits before the account number on the bottom of the check).
2. The account number.
3. The amount of the check.
4. The Payee (who the check is payable to).
5. The signature.

The routing number and often the account number are often printed in small type above the date line. A number in the form xx-xxxx/xxxx contains the bank routing number.
