On the game box it says that it's "online gaming with no fees" but how free is it really?

Instead of charging a fee, they just keep releasing expansions.

Expect to pay 50 bucks per new expansion.. they're up to like 4 now.

You can play with just the original game too, you just don't get all the newer content.

What that statement is saying is that Guild Wars does not have a monthly subscription fee like many MMORPGs (like World of Warcraft).

You still have to buy the game (or just an access key) you have to pay for your Internet connections and everything else that a computer needs to run.

If you plan on buying Guild Wars (or an MMORPG) always buy new. In Guild Wars case, it is cheaper to buy the older games in a store than buying them on-line.

There are 3 Guild Wars out right now and one expansion pack. Prophecies, Factions, and Nightfall are all stand-alone games; any one of them can be played by itself. Eyes of the North is an expansion pack, you have to have one other game in the series to play it. (You can hold of on GW:EN for a while, only level 20 characters can participate.)

You buy the game and then you get to play all you want for free. Other games like World of Warcraft, Everquest, City of Heros, etc charge $10-$20 bucks a month to be able to play. Guild Wars doesnt do that, its free. If you want to play the expansions you have to buy those as well but you still dont have to pay a monthly fee to play them.

Free:
There is no charge for connecting to the game servers.

Not Free:
Buying the game.
Whatever you pay for connecting to the internet.
Buying expansions - and from what I hear, there's no real way around that in the long run, because running just the basic game will make you fell (and be) left out eventually.

It is totally free, as long as you have the program. It costs about 40 dollars to install, and you can go, no fees required. However, you still need to buy all expansions if you want them.

Free. I mean, you have to pay for the game itself, but it's free otherwise.
