I was looking up on a map of India and saw several scattered regions called Pondicherry. What is it actually?

Hey, I live in Pondicherry ! It's now been renamed Puducherry. It's actually a Union Territory, not a state. Apart from the main region Pondicherry, Mahe in Kerala, Yanam in Andhra Pradesh and Karaikal in Tamil Nadu also come under the administration of Pondicherry. That's why those places also are marked Pondicherry. Hope your doubt has been satisfactorily cleared !

Pondicherry is a Union Territory of India.

In September 2006, the territory changed its official name from Pondicherry to Puducherry, which means "New village" in the Tamil language.

Pondicherry consists of four small unconnected districts: Pondicherry, Karaikal, and Yanam on the Bay of Bengal and Mahé on the Arabian Sea. Puducherry and Karaikal are by far the larger ones, and are both enclaves of Tamil Nadu. Yanam and Mahé are enclaves of Andhra Pradesh and Kerala respectively.

It is becoming a Corporate destination for hospitality and meetings. Goa is a different cup of tea. It is traditionally known for its quaint alien culture. Hopefully, Pondi will not tread the Goan way.
