i live in san francisco. i just mailed out my overdue paycheck on september 6 around afternoon time. (i did it by dropping it off at my apartment's OUTBOX) i didnt take it to the destination myself because i was too busy. the destination is 2.1 miles (8minutes) from my house. Do you think it got to the destination already? i heard before it gets delivered it has to go through some processes at the post office... ?? today is september 8, did it get there yet??.... serious answer please.

Mail at an apartment building's outbox is picked up the same time as mail is delivered to that apartment building. Regular, first class ($0.41) mail going 2.1 miles is usually delivered the day after it is picked up (excluding Sundays and holidays). If you mailed it before mail was delivered to your apartment complex/building on 9/6, it was probably delivered on 9/7. If you mailed it after mail was delivered to your apartment complex/building on 9/6, it was probably not picked up until 9/7, and therefore will not be delivered until 9/8; it is only 10:42 A.M. in San Franscisco now, so it may or may not yet be delivered at this time, but it should be delivered today.

If you put it in the apartments out-box in the afternoon, assume you missed that days mail. That means the Post Office received it on Friday Sept 7. The sorting facility should have received it that last night. If the address you are sending it to is served by the same sorting office, it should have been delivered today (Sat, Sept 8). If the delivery address is served by a different sorting facility, add at least one business day to be sorted at the destination sorting office. It may take up to a week to go from one sorting office to another if they are on opposite coasts.

Hard to determine. Sometimes mail will travel long distances by the next day and sometimes it takes weeks to get short distances. It really all depends on the post office and where the central sorting office is.
