Depends on what type of cat book. If you want to do a "Warriors" type book (the Warriors series by Erin Hunter if you have no clue what I'm talking about) then you want names like:Barkpelt, Deathfoot, etc.
But if you are writting a book where the cats just have cute fluffy name, I recommened naming then based on personalities or pelt colors. Like if one cat is happy all the time name him "Sunny", or maybe if a cat has a dark plet name her "Shade", you get the idea. You just have to know what you want to name the cat! It's like naming your own pet, so maybe go out and buy a cat name book. They are quite useful.

Cat names tend to be pretty imaginative...
I had a real smart cat named Winston, he was a genius.
Another smart cat is one named Fubu, she is totally smart.
Jnco is kinda a gangsta cat like you'd expect.
Shaka lives in the catnip, like you'd expect.
Smoke was a dear sweet wonderful kitty.
Not so smart but very sweet is Little Vicious--really nice with humans but horrible with other cats.
Gazortumflatz was wonderful.
Kitty and Blackie are not too imaginative, but they were also wonderful.
Fonderg was OK.
Luther was a thug. Hunter was a zen cat, so wise, so placid.
Neko is the Japanese word for cat, some people use that. Not so many use the Hawaiian word, Popoki, but its still kinda cute. Gato en espan~ol and Chat en Francais.
Good luck with your book.

Well, I always thought it was cool when people named animals human names, but not just like 'bob'. more like really elegant names, like theodore, charlotte, Isadora, and Bellatrix (though that name is mostly associated with Harry Potter, I still really like that name)
Or, you could go with the traditional cat names like Fluffy, Shadow, etc...
And I dont know why, but the name Shaw for like, a guy cat keeps popping up in my mind, even though Shaw is a last name I think.

Cats I have known and loved:
Jinx (Jinxie)
Minx (Minxie)
Lynx (Lynxie)
Jemima Feathertail
Minnaloushe (Black Minnaloushe, from W B Yeats' "The Cat and the Moon")
Icicle (white cat with claws!)
Ebony (shiny black)
Abelard and Heloise
Tabitha and Samantha (from "Bewitched")
Try some ancient Egyptian names, as they loved cats. Bastet, Isis, Cleo, etc.

Flug, Gorm, Helmer, Groink, Spludge. These names sound good to me for cats or human babies.

"Sooty Cat" (if it is mostly black of course).
It's the only name I am going to submit. Is it not perfect for a book?
