I would like to find out how to do this in steps for I have a far more difficult polynomial to solve.

Thank you

Because it is a 4 degre polynomial equation, you will have four answers (real and/or complex) for x.

I don't know how to calculate that in steps with only a pencil and paper, but math programs on computer hopefully exists... so with the help on mathematica, you can find:

2 real solutions:
x = -2.44461
x = 1.67201

2 complex solutions:
x = -0.447032 - 2.12841 i
x = -0.447032 + 2.12841 i

According to Descates law of signs, there will be at most 1 positive root and 3 or 1 negative roots.

A negative root appears between -2.4675 and 2.4677
A positive root appears between 1.656 and 1.657. The other two roots are complex and not real.

The way to approach these type (ones that cannot be factored) problems is to use a calculator or to try values of x and see if you can locate where f(x) changes sign between to succesive values of x. The answer lies between these two succesive values. Use Newton Rhapson method to get the desired accuracy.

3x^4+5x^3+4x^2+x+50-108=0
3x^4+5x^3+4x^2+x-58=0

there is no integer root for this equation
x is between 1,65 and 1,66
