I drew up a contract for some drywall work I was going to do for a contractor. I signed it and dated it, then I faxed it to him. He emailed it back with some modifications. I didn't sign anything afterwards. I started the project, but midway was told that I have to use certain screws or it wouldn't pass inspection. The contract says nothing about screws. Also, the contractor wants orange peel on the walls, but the contract says nothing about texturing the walls, only the ceiling.

Can I charge extra for these modifications he's making?

If so, what if he says no?

If no, what can I do?

Why did you start a job without a signed contract? You admit you didn't sign anything after the contractor changed items. The screws should be a given, if your area requires them. (or is someone requesting them on their own?) I don't believe the texture on the wall should go on without specifications in the contract (which you don't have).

I think if the screws are needed to pass code, you should have known that as a professional and had to have used them in the first place. I dont know about the orange peel...?
