They're tent catapillars. For some reason, they don't seem to do anything about them in the eastern part of the country. I'm from Washington state, and they would encourage people to call in and report any type of tent catapillars, and they would come out, cut it down and destroy them. When I moved to PA, I saw a TON of them and called and let them know about them, and they laughed and said that they weren't concerned about them. After three years, they were all over the place. They're quite harmful, but if the PA authorities don't care, that's their issue. I find that it's the same way in TN, and since you're writing about it in NC, they don't care either.

Go figure...but remember, these are probably the same people that thought kudzu was a good idea too.

I believe they are tent caterpillars. They are not spider webs. They each have eggs in them that hatch lots of caterpillars that come out and eat the leaves from the tree.

No, they aren't dying, they're some kind of Caterpillar that when they come out of that nest, they eat everything in your garden.

they could be tent catapillars or web worm wich are two different critters. both will do damage to trees.

web worms...pretty common.they dont affect all trees but can kill them.usually they just affect the branches.I get them in my wild cherry,plum, and walnut trees.they never bother the others.I just cut off the branches i can reach and burn them
