New York is made up of five boroughs, each of which could be a major city on its own, that make up a total of 309 sq miles and more than eight million people. Manhattan, which is what most people think of when they think of New York City, is only 23 sq miles of land with over 1,500,000 residents. The number of people actually on the island swells during the day when people come to work from outlying areas.

The New York Metropolitan area has over 22 million residents. In contrast the Chicago land metropolitan area has around 10 million.

Chicago proper has 228 sq miles and 2,896,016 residents.
