Your father is really taking his life into his own hands, by
tempting the odds, isn't he? Before he started using the gum,
surely someone, if not just the druggist, told him he had to
completely stop smoking, before starting the gum. Otherwise
the gum won't do any good. You have to totally rely on the
gum, or the patch, or the inhaler, or the pill. All forms of
nicotine replacement therapy. Each is designed to work a
different way, and without smoking with them.
I don't know what the odds are for using both, but I do know where I lived in Phoenix, a tenent where we lived, died
from using both. He was an older retired man. He left his
wife alone, and it was a sad thing for her to be living alone
at her older age.
So make no mistake, the combination of two sources of
nicotine, will kill you with a massive heart attack. Whether it
would be more likely with an elderly person, I don't know. But
their hearts are not as strong to take the punishment.
I have been a nicotine gum user for four years now. I have
a doctor who understands the daily stresses I have from
several sources including medical. He'd rather see me on the
gum, than in using cigs again. I still have a craving on occasion, and I hear it's typical with all ex smokers.
Your father has to stop being a wimp and get tough with
himself. He's an addict who needs to quit this dangerous
habit he has. He's on borrowed time, for a fact. And he has
to set his mind on that, and stop smoking by using the gum,
or maybe the patch and the gum to really lesson the trauma
of not having as much nicotine as he's used to with smoking.
I had to use both the patch and gum to be able to not buy
any more cigs. If they had been in the house, I probably would
not have had the strength to quit. He'll have to get rid of not
only the cigs, but the ash trays, and lighters. Then they can
air out the place, clean drapes, etc and not allow the nicotine
staleness fill the air.
I'm also surprised your father isn't having respiratory dis-
eases being he's older and still smoking. I had to finally be
so sick with respiratory and heart problems, I had no choice
but to quit. You have to be scared enough I suppose to quit.
Or just determined enough to do so. I wish him well and I
wish you alot of luck in trying to convince a stubborn man.

Chantix is a new drug that stops smoking in its tracks with little or no withdrawal. Print that info off for him.
The danger of too much nicotine is toxicity which can lead to rarely fatal heart beat irregularities, digestive issues, sweating, hypertension, etc. It is his life to live as he wishes. You can provide him with the facts by looking up nicotine and giving him the results, but nagging is not the answer.
Sorry you are worried.

You would'nt die or anything drastic like that. I got out of the hospital once and forgot I had on the patch. They had just put it on to so I know it was strong as shi_.. I lit up a cigarrett and smoked the whole thing. I got a really bad headache before I remembered I forgot to take that stupid patch off. So I guess the most that could happened would be a real bad headache.
