the weather in California is so mild, you just continue to balance the water, brush, vaccuum, and clean the filter every 3 months... if you get solar heating it extends your swimming to almost 9 months a year... also remember to take a sample of water to your pool store and have it analyzed every 4 months... you might have to add conditioner...

Check out the great page on pool water at http://appliancequickfix.com/ before you hurt yourself or some pool store sells you a load of nonsense. OH and yes - I think that if it is not freezing over, you dont have to anything extra.
