The lady in the beauty contest, for all her stumbling around, really did know the answer, she got flustered, I really was embarrassed for her.
So far as the education system, we have under paid teachers, class rooms that have over the limit of the number of students.
Parents who can not, or will not, monitor their child's home work
assignments. The school system gets paid per head that shows up each day.
The young people would rather play on the computers and hang with their friends than study, again, no parental supervision.
For the small number, that have not grasped the concept of education, and been pushed through anyway, we have done them an injustice.
Each school system has a special education department to address these issues, our teachers need to spark not only an interest, but some enthusiasm about learning. Books and Reading are almost obsolete these days.
If you are a student, or know a student, spend some time with that young person, help, and encourage them, instead of poking fun and making snide remarks.....this is our future leaders of tomorrow....we could be in deep trouble ...it does take a whole village to raise a child.
There are many, many brilliant students out there today, encourage them...thank you for asking my opinion.

The reason why a fifth of the public can not even locate their country on a map is due to the abysmal PUBLIC educational system in the United States. I volunteered at a public school and spoke with many of the teachers there about the problems they encountered in the school system. Many said that even if children could not pass the classes that the school district insisted that they push the children through the grade. So you end up with children who can barely read in the 8th grade. The teachers also told me stories about how they had to be overly PC and not single out child who needed extra help because it could be detrimental to the child's self-esteem! So what is worse for the child, not being able to read or write or suffering a momentary setback and eventually through hard work being able to read and function in society?

>How do you explain that a fifth of Americans can't locate their country on a map?

The american culture is based around anything but intelligence and knowledge. Americans detest being smart, they want to be like all their friends and if that involves being stupid (which it usually does), they couldn't care less. Many of them have lost the idea of what it is to be smart; they think that watching TV shows telling them about Roswell and the Loch Ness Monster are the most educational thing that's going to happen to them. And why all this? Because the government and the corporations want it that way, of course! The dumber people are, the easier it is to keep them doing what you want and prevent them from realizing what's being done to them in order for the corporations and the government to get money. The american culture did not arrive at its anti-intellectual state through chance alone, no, the government was very careful in constantly pushing it in that direction. You can see it all over the place. The media is full of nothing but sports, murders, canned laughter and so-called 'reality shows', while pretty much anything informative or intellectual is carefully avoided.

It's because a lot of American children are being failed by our public education system and by their parents. The education system has to be concerned with teaching basics more than political correctness or self-esteem and parents have to care enough to know what their kids are learning (or not learning) and create an understanding of the importance of knowledge beyond a chat on MySpace to their progeny.

Lest we get too down on Americans, this problem is everywhere. See link below...

Oppression. I work at a school and that many students just get pushed along to the next grade. If having an educated public was important to our leaders they would allocate more money to schools and afterschool programs. I think they don't want us to be too smart. It is unexcusable when they are telling us we have to import scientists and engineers because we don't have enough American ones. The cost of going to college is out of reach for a good share of our population, unless you're willing to go deep in debt.
