if you already have a phone, a good cell phone that has no service, but is compatible with other prepaid services, the moto v3, 4 example, is it possible just to buy the prepaid minutes, or do you have to buy a new phone if you want the minutes?

To get the prepaid service, you must first activate the service Buying minutes, or units will only get you talk time, the service itself, like tracfone for instance must be set up as well. This requires no contract or deposits. There are no requirements to keep the service for one or two years, etc. You do have to periodically recharge your units, or minutes to keep the service active.
