Want something that will store/edit their digital photos, surf the net, send the occasional email, & type/store files in WORD. Unfortunately they live in an area where a dial up connection is their only option. Basically, they want is something that is relatively fast & not that expensive. There will be no games loaded on, as they are in their early 70'S.

I like Dell - My whole family has them and we've never had a bit of trouble. Vista Home Basic is good enough, but when you get it online be sure to get these programs to help keep spyware off:

Adaware is free at http://www.lavasoftusa.com

Spybot Search and Destroy is free at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

SpywareBlaster is free at http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

The new PC will also come with a trial version on Antivirus but it will expire soon, so you might as well just uninstall it right away and install a good free antivirus like AVG. It is free at http://www.grisoft.com.

If you are only using dial-up you won't need a firewall. Only broadband connections absolutely have to have one.
