When growing up were you told to always wear nice clean underwear in case you get run over by a car? I know it is meant in jest but i just wondered if others were told the same. Remember Bridget Jones and her big knickers?

Yes, yes, yes! By golly, we may have had rags to wear, but we had clean undies!

I'll tell you a true story: Christmas eve in the late 70's, my grandfather was involved in a car accident. My grandmother, after learning he would be okay, was absolutely horrified when they handed her his clothes and guess what she had right on top of the pile? Yep... There weren't just skids on the road at the time of the accident!

Yes. It's funny isn't it. A girl I work with was in a very bad car accident a few years ago. Her mother had always told her to wear her 'good' underwear in case she was run over etc etc. When she got to the hospital she had broken her hip and pelvis (ouch). Her jeans had to be cut off her. Her mother was there. When the jeans came off my friend realised she had worn 'not so good knickers'. You know, bit over washed and a few threads hanging. Her mothers reaction, bearing in mind the poor girls injuries...gave her a swat on the arm and said: "Look at the state of you! what did I always tell you about wearing your good knickers!" Great anecdote, don't you think?

LOL - yes, yes, yes! I made a joke about just that in one my answers a couple of days ago. People probably thought I was mad!

I grew up in a small village in the north of Scotland and my mother always insisted I had clean underwear on when I was little. I think she was positively terrified the village would think she was a bad mother if I was skittled by a passing car and my underwear was found to be dirty. I could just never quite work out why they'd be more interested in my underwear than in resuscitating me.

lol yes I was told this.........but then my friend was in a really bad car crash and she said as she staggered from the car and saw the blood, damage etc to the car and the others, she then threw up and pooped her self as well, so having clean knickers at that point would be a moot point.

My grand mother would say "if you get hit by a bus"

and would NEVER own a pair like those, I like them comfy but that is taking the pi$$ IMO

regards

Yes many times! Just imagine, hit by a car, multiple fractures, parents rush to hospital and the doctor meets them and says "we're going to pin her radius and ulna and she'll have to go into traction for a few weeks, but I do have some very serious news, I'm afraid her underwear was in a disgusting state!" Always made me laugh, even as a kid.

I was but be honest, if you were about to be run down by a bus, how clean would your underwear be 2 seconds later?

Absolutely.

Have passed the message on in another form to my kids!

Can you imagine trying to fend off the administrations of a gorgeous paramedic because your underwear was shabby?!
It would be mortifying enough to be screaming in pain without that!

Yep, my mom always told me that when I was growing up, and also before we were going to fly somewhere. Seriously, if the plane was going to crash, I don't think there would much emphasis on my knickers.

I was told that and I tell that to my boys all the time. If not because of the threat of being run over, it just makes you feel fresh
