The need to dominate a person or group of people is linked to the social structure of patriarchy. One of the defining features of patriarchy is hierarchical organization. The USA claims to be the most powerful country in the world therefore making it the most dominate and making every other country in the world lesser than. If you look around your own world you will see that many things are based on hierarchies and it even comes down to competition in sports, the need to be number one and on top is bred into us from an early age. The best example of this hierarchy is how early catholicism defined where everything is under God. This was called The Great Chain of Being, I think and it listed every creature in the universe and they were under God, but humans were above animals and plants.
