Not to mention the worst handwriting?

Actually it's because they are are more mentally coordinated.

I would tend to agree, being absolutely brilliant myself, and having the worst handwriting ever. But I don't know about the other 50 million or so brilliant people in the world ; I haven't seen their spelling nor their handwriting to tell whether 'most' suffer from the same affliction as me; so I couldn't make a sweeping generalisation.

In times past, PhD students had to forward their theses in handwriting, and some of the beautiful 'copperplate' written theses were things to behold - much better than the dashed-off word-processor assisteded documents today.

Also, for all I know, some of the world's most brilliant people may not even have had the opportunity to attend school; so might not have learnt to read and write

This might be because their minds are way ahead of their tongues and their hands can't move as fast as they think.
