When something is ironic it is funny in a non-laughing sort of way.

The way that a situation might unfold, you might not have expected it to be that way which causes the irony.

It can also include a contradiction. It's usually when you're perceiving something to be one way and it turns out to be something pretty different.

Irony has more than one meaning.

Most commonly, it means the unfortunate occurrence of a situation that would otherwise be fortunate, as in some of the examples cited in other answers

Dramatic irony refers to a situation where a person is led to believe something, whereas the meaning is actually the opposite, which is obvious to a third party.

A third form is when the speaker means the opposite of what he has said, with the express purpose of letting the listener know, as in "Well, THAT was a good idea, wasn't it?"; when in fact the listener knows quite well that it was a blunder.

if something is ironic it means that the complete opposite of what you though would happen/would be happened/was.

so:
It was ironic the dog survived the fall but the man didn't

because you would have thought the dog was more likely to die than the man.

Irony is an ending that you would not expect; like in The Scarlet Letter. Doomsdale, Hester's lover and father of her love child, was also the same person who sentenced her to the stockade with the "A." He also led the townspeople the center of town where they were displayed.
