There is tons of material on how they are not 'real'. The principle by which they 'work' is well understood by psychologists and no one takes them seriously.
First, you might not put enough pressure on the pointer to make it move, but several people together will each exert enough pressure that as a group they will make the pointer move. So, from the point of view of each person, THEY (as an individuals) aren't doing anything, but as a group, they are.
Second, assuming everyone at the table is being 'honest' and not moving it on purpose (and that is the most common situation), UNCONSCIOUSLY, individuals expect or desire certain answers and will steer the pointer to certain outcomes. They may not be aware they are doing this, but this sort of unconscious influence is common and well documented.
Third, people WANT it to work, so they see results that look meaningful even when they are not. Consider this, if you read your horoscope, you could read the horoscope for any sign and it will apply just as well as the horoscope for your own month. However, believers will see meaning when there is none. Belief that something is working for means people see it as working even when it isn't.

Denis B. is right completely.
I have a story to relay, which is not my personal story, however I heard it told at a small workshop I attended, and the lady wasn't lying; that I'd bet anything on.
She and her girlfriend once got "into" the board heavy; for days on end, they would sit and use it. The more they used it, the faster the pointer would begin to race 'here and there', which added drama and excitement to their "project."
THen at the end of their experience, she had something happen to her which scared the living daylights out of her. As she sat there at the board with her fingers on the pointer, she felt the hair stand up on the back of her neck, and suddenly found that she was frozen and could not really move. She felt this energy coming in to her... or trying to come in... which was unable to move in beyond her throat (something like that)... and finally, she was able to break free of it, and she swears that this spirit was on the brink of possessing her, and she will never, ever go near one of those boards again.

people play with ouija boards for they same reason they watch horror video clips: they like the exhilaration featuring being scared for slightly. heavily...they seem to be a board interest, and not something extra. Milton Bradley isn't mass generating a gadget of evil, to set the infants of the international against god.

well, me and my friends played with one when we were younger. it was able to us about the past/present, but it really couldn't predict the future. they work and it's evil. a week later after playing with it, my friend stowed it and her garage and the garage caught on fire.
