I just changed the water for my betta fish and I was hoping it would make him happy. But, ever since I put him back in the bowl he's had his tail and gills flared as if he's ready to fight. He's not being as calm as he usually is and I'm worried that something's wrong. I've only had him for a week but, it almost looks like he's trying to escape. I'm worried, I want him to be happy. What should I do?

1) did u change all of the water? because your only ment to change about 25% a week.
2) did u just put tap water in by its self? your ment to use tape safe to remove the harmfull chamiclas in tap water. (pet shops sell this)

also make sure the temp is right and check the amonia, nitrate, nitrite and ph levels are not to high or low for him. (pet shops sell the tests)

good luck with him

My Betta lives in a little 1/2 gallon bowl, I change his water twice a week with room temperature water, I treat the new water with declorinator before I put it in his bowl, and he has lived quite happily for almost a year and a half now. Flaring his gills is quite normal and is healthy. Now and then I put a mirror beside his bowl and he thinks its another betta - he flares his gills and swims around his bowl and his fins are all spread out. It's good for him! Don't leave the mirror for more than an hour or so. Don't worry about your betta. He's fine - but keep his water clean, dont listen to the guy who said they like filthy water. That's bunk. Oh, and feed him two small meals twice a day. Bettas LOVE freeze dried blood worms, mine goes crazy over them, and also those little floating pellets made special for bettas. DON'T overfeed him! Talk to him often and love him and he will live a good long time.

You need a proper tank setup with a filter. It's a myth that Bettas can live in dirty water or in bowls. They need proper care just like any other fish.

You shouldn't just change all the water like that. You need to change just 25% at a time and for that, you'll need a filtration system.

did you use the drops to take the chlorine out of the water. I always let the water stand for a couple of days before I change his bowl, so it comes to room temperature.

If you used tap water then try using bottled water, he may not like it for that reason

Betta's are happier in dirty water. They live in drainage ditches in indochina.
