If you're interested in psychology - go for it. Especially if you have internal motivation like helping your family or people like them. It might help you to have more compassion to patients if you end up treating patients (psycologists do many other things).
Any career choice is open to you, including career in psychology. It is possible that there are some exceptions, like high stress environment in a military or something like that, but other than that - you can pick whatever you like.
You might want to check statistics - what percentage of people experience depression, how many are diagnosed with bi-polar. A lot.
Don't get mad at Justin. Don't waste your presious life energy. I know his answer is unpleasant to say the least, and rather uninformative. All he did is he pointed out a discrepancy in the way you phrased it. People can't hear your voice or see your face when you put your thought in writing. Read it several times as if you're reading someone else's stuff, be very critical to what you wrote and how you sound, and hopefully fewer smart-a**s will pick on it. Trust me, you will need this skill in the science world. Good luck.

I, for one, am glad to see the genuine and powerful feeling of anger being expressed.
Here's what I know about psychology in the midwest states. IF you've ever been in treatment, esp. acute or longer psychiatric hospitalization; "they" won't let you in the club. If you have been "in the chair" as a patient of psychotherapy; don't tell too many people as "they" are don't like people in the club who have had therapy. YES ! It is absolutely ludicrous!
But, you see, "they" are a bunch of frightened children; all people pleasers, who have never had an original idea in their life. They are scared that if you've been in therapy, or if you've got some para professional work history, that you won't be as strict and rigid as 'they' are. "They" do demand little automatons, preferably all of the same mold, indoctrinated with the same mind sets. For example, you must graduate from a social worker diploma mill to even be allowed to become a clinical social worker.
Now, if you want to be a therapist to change the jerks, cretins, narcissists and inconsiderate people of this world..I hate to say it; but, you are in for major frustrations. Those people have what we call 'garlic' disorders.....that is, everyone around the person suffers, but they can't even smell the garlic. LOL
However, there is a critical need for spunky, fiesty, energetic young people to "play the game", get the credentials and then work within the system to make substantive changes to it.
Best Wishes

I didn't see you original question so I don't know the details of all that went on. To answer your original question, I think that a person with mental problems could pursue a degree in psychology and successfully practice if in the course of pursuing that degree they work on understanding their own problems and resolve them to a great extent.
This is not an attack but a suggestion. When others attack you for your views and desires, don't get upset and reply with hostility and hatred. That's exactly the response they're looking for and they get off on upsetting you. Instead, feel a calm assurance in yourself and rebut with facts, calmly and rationally. Let your attackers be the ones who use petty name calling. You are above them and should lead by example.
Good luck in your career choice.

Well doodledancer
I'm actually very sorry for all of this that you've been going through with all of these noncaring people you've attracted !!
And, looking closely at your post I'm wondering WHY that might have been --- seeing that you are so absolutely loving and sweet in your views and expressions !!
I for one believe that you will feel right at home in this profession for you will have thousands of colleges that share some form of mental disorders themselves !! I mean, who better to deal with a community of people in extreme mental situations that another group of people with somewhat questionable mental stability --- right --- takes one to know one has been MY view for a long long time !!
And, as a side benefit to thinking about this --- I, for one, have realized one very important thing here --- this one fact may very well be why it takes literally years and years for a lot of the work OF psychologists to get done --- being so closely related TO the problems and SO intricately associative TO the circumstance OF those complexities --- this professional community are just naturally going to be working at doing a much more thorough job of straightening all of that out even though it might take until the person is dead from old age !!!!
Oh, and thanks for the offer of treatment -- but I am one of those lucky ones who is perfectly happy with the insanity that I pocess !!!

The problem is that the *ssholes think they're fine, so they won't go to a psychologist. That's why the country is screwed up, etc. As my psychiatrist would always tell me (when I was panicking about whether my mental disorders made me crazy), "all of the truly crazy people I've worked with don't know they're crazy."

that's certainly somewhat consumer-friendly. human beings have a tendency to choose for a occupation in issues that be conscious to their existence. A psychologist who experienced melancholy and stress understads what that's choose for to pass by using those issues, and can hence empathize with their shoppers. the only difficulty they could be careful of isn't imposing their own stories upon the shopper. which may be complicated. think of approximately it... while somebody you already know ha a difficulty, and you have been in a matching problem, you immediately choose for to tell them your adventure, and what helped you to get by using it. If the guy desiring a occupation in psychology could refrain from their own thoughts and such, then they might make a large psychologist.
