Yes if you answer several questions on a particular topic and they feel you are a credible source, then you may become a top contributor. I was for a long while, then took a break from Y!A and lost it, so i don't think it really has anything to do with answering a set amount of questions correctly or the best at least.

Just answer a lot of questions, particularly in a certain category. Its kind of random how they do it and if you become inactive for a little while, they will take it away. I used to be one in Earth Sciences and Geology but it disappeared.
