In the movie Fargo the detective meets with an old college friend. He explains about his "wife dying" etc. Later we find out he is a liar. My question is....why is this scene in the movie. I love this movie, but this scene always throws me off...

I see the movie as being about Marge Gunderson and her quest to solve the murders that happened in her town and all the other stuff is just to tie it all together.

While digging into the clues, she ran into an old college friend. He seemed lonely and I think she had pity on him and agreed to have dinner. At dinner he gave her a sob story about his wife dying to gain more pity. I think it was in the movie to show what a caring character she was.

When I watched it, I also got the impression that the charatcter of Mike could have been borderline psychopath and could have hurt her had he got the chance.
