I've always followed baseball (even though not nearly as closed as I've followed football and basketball), but I have two quick questions:

1.) If a hitter smashes a ball to the outfield and the outfielder misses the play; however, the outfielder guns him out at second, what's the ruling on the play? An error?

2.) If there's a baserunner on first. The batter hits a ball towards him and hits the baserunner on the leg while the baserunner is still on the first base bag, is he out or safe?

Thanks!

1. Does the outfielder drop the ball? In that case it is an error with a putout at 2nd (E-7, 7-4 or 7-6) or (E-8, 8-4 or 8-6) or (E-9, 9-4 or 9-6)

Either the 2nd baseman #4 or the shortstop #6 would get the actual putout at 2nd base

Does the ball get by the outfielder and he throws out the runner? Basehit (single), putout at second (7-4 or 7-6) or (8-4 or 8-6) or (9-4 or 9-6)

2. If a batted ball hits a runner while the runner is on the base, the runner is out IF a ball has NOT passed an infielder. If the ball HAS PASSED an infielder, the runner is safe

The following excerpt is from MLB.COM

RUNNER HIT BY BATTED BALL
If a runner is hit by a batted ball he is out and no judgment of intent is required unless he is hit by a deflected ball, or the ball has already passed all infielders, in which case the umpire must decide if he intended to be hit to interfere, obstruct, impede, hinder or confuse the defense.

A runner must avoid a fielder attempting to field a BATTED BALL. If he does not he is guilty. He may run out of the baseline, if necessary, if the fielder is fielding a batted ball. This is a fairly easy call. Rule 7.09(L) and 7.08(b). The fielder's protection begins the moment the ball is hit. That protection continues as he completes his initial play. His protection ends if he misplays the batted ball and has to move to recover it. Contact with the fielder is not necessary for interference to be called.

The runner is out when hit by a batted ball before it passes an infielder. (Rule 5.09(f) and 7.08(f)). If it passes one infielder and another fielder who is on the outfield side of the basepath had a possible play on the ball, the runner could still be called out. This is a judgment by the umpire. The pitcher is not considered an infielder for this rule. If the ball passes the pitcher, and the runner is hit before the ball passes an infielder, the runner is out. The runner is expected to avoid the ball.

If a runner is hit by a FAIR batted ball while he is in FAIR territory he is out with the above exceptions. This includes while he is standing on a base. The bases are in FAIR territory. If he is hit in fair territory, while on the base, before the ball has passed an infielder, he is out, except if he is hit by an infield-fly.

When a runner is called out for being hit by a fair batted ball, the batter gets first base. All other runners remain at the base they held at the time of the pitch, unless forced to advance by the batter being awarded first base.

1. It could be ruled in several ways. A single and out at second with an assist to the outfielder.

Or it could be ruled an error on the outfielder with an assist on the out at second.

2. Runner is out if he gets hit by a batted ball, even if he is on a base.

1) Without seeing the play, it's hard to answer that. It could be an error or a single, without really knowing what missing the play means.

2)Baserunner is out. Standing on the base does not represent a safe haven.

1. it's an error on the outfielder and thrown out at second. the hitter doesn't get a hit for it since it was an error but the ruling would be error on outfielder and hitter thrown out trying to advance to second.

2. safe, if your on a base your safe. just think about it, if the other team tags you with the ball while your on the base your safe same with if it hits you while on the base. also another rule is if you get hit by a ball and both your feet are in foul territory your safe too

1. Error
2. If he's touching first base then he's fine but if he's off it then I believe he's out. I'm saying this because I saw a game one time where the runner was going from second to third after the batter hit the ball and the ball hit the runners leg and he was out.

1 i would have to see the, play but it sounds like a base hit, then thrown out ot 2nd no error.

2 base runner is always safe while standing on the bag unless you have two runners on the same base at the same time thenth returning runne is safe, while the advancing runner is out when tagged on the base.

llk51 is correct but with this exception:
"If a runner is touching his base when touched by an Infield Fly, he is not out, although the batter is out."
official rules 7.08(f)
