okay, my husband put a quart and a half in, which put it at full. 2 days later, he put in the other half, and still needed more. no puddles anywhere. then the next day..... I start the van (yes, it started)I got a kinda shaky, vibration and noise (which is not normal) check engine light was on. I put it into drive and then it died and absolutely NO oil pressure. It will start, it dies right after it starts though...anyone have any idea what it could be?

okay...I checked out the van, and this is what I observed...
the dipstic has oil on it, plenty, I wouild say, no milky white stuff on it. Been sitting for 3 days and there is no puddle of oil or anything, however the oil filter has oil on it, like its been dripping off of it. ( we are probably due for an oil change, we do change the oil fairly regularly)
I don't know if this info is helpful or not...

Rose, I would love to know what the noise sounded like, it would likely make this question a snap to answer. 150,000 miles is high enough to have a bunch of carbon get washed into the oil pan and block the sump screen on your oil pump. If your van really has no oil pressure then do not attempt to operate the van as it will do even more damage to the engine. I would tow the van in and have it looked at, it may be over for the van already but if you operate the van it will be all over without oil pressure. Good luck Rose I hope the engine is OK.

Bad oil leak at filter when the engine is running on the road may have damaged the oil pump. Check radiator for oil, indication of leaking or blown head gasket. With high mileage the engine may need to be flushed. Is there oil misted in the air intake system? that would account for the vibration at starts.
Good Luck!

If your red oil pressure light isn't on indicating loss of oil pressure, maybe your dash oil pressure gauge has simply failed. The next smart thing to do is to actually measure the oil pressure of the engine by attaching a mechanics shop oil pressure gauge directly to the engine using the oil pressure sensor port (see gauge example below). If you get 13 psi or more at hot idle, your oil pressure is fine and you need to review all your tuneup items.

The computer has shut the engine down.

To clear the shut down code off, disconnect the negative battery cable for a couple minutes.

Reconnect it and start the van.
It should idle just fine now.

Check your gages again. If you still have no oil pressure or it's make some god awfull noises, turn it off and have it towed to a shop.
