tell your husband you are right. My husband is a mechanic for 23 years, he says these newer cars cant be left on E for much time as it will ascrew up the system. they are not made to be treated that way. However.... you have a few miles that is ok to drive, like to the nearest station when the light first comes on. Also, having a nearly empty tank in winter is bad.
jsut put some gas in it, and my heart is with you, we are all paying way too much for it these days.

It won't ruin the engine to run low on gas BUT, if your vehicle has an electric fuel pump in the tank, which most modern fuel-injected vehicles do, it WILL probably fry the fuel pump to run OUT of gas and cost lots of money to repair. Call some shops and get quotes to replace the fuel pump and you'll see what I mean. You should never!! let the vehicle run out of gas on newer vehicles---the gas in the tank helps cool the pump and running it low on gas can pick up crud from the bottom of the tank which may plug up the filter and be an unnecessary expense to replace.

it won't ruin the engine but if you like to pay $600 or more to replace your fuel pump keep running the car below a quarter tank of gas, the gas keeps the fuel pump cool as it's in the gas tank so when low on gas the pump gets hot and it will only take that so many times.

I wouldn't say ruin the engine but all the crap is in the bottom of the tank rust and debris will get sucked up but the fuel filter will catch it if you maintain your vehicle and buy decent gas and change your filter regularly you don't have to worry about it

The suction tube does not float. It is in the same place if the tank is full or near empty.
When the light comes on, you know you should have already got some gas.
