Thats a good question. I think they must be different creatures because why would the slug be called a slug if it was a snail? =D

Or probably.. the snail couldn't afford to pay its house rent so got kicked out by the owner and will be called a slug until it gets another home =]

Slugs are a creature all on their own but they are related to snail slugs can get much bigger than snails

Slugs are a soft-shelled snail. So actually a bit of both. They are definitely from the same family, it is just that some slugs have adapted to find moisture sources outside of ponds and such.
They are both gastropods.

They are a cousin of snails, but an entirely separate animal. A slug won't find a shell like a hemit crab will.

slugs are just snails without the shell and can be very harmful to gardens and plants. My sister puts out beer in a container made just for these little pesty insects to kill them so that they won't kill her plants. You wouldn't believe how many she's killed this way. Who would figure out that snails love beer - don't know if they get drunk before they die or not - LOL!
