I was on the train home from the city yesterday and wasn't wearing any shoes. I was sitting on the seat with my leg crossed.
The person next to me noticed the dirty sole of my bare foot and asked whether my shoes had been stolen.
I replied no and that I am barefoot by choice but they didn't believe me and offered to buy me thongs because they felt sorry for me having such dirty feet.
I put my dirty foot on the floor, feeling embarassed.
How do you tell people that bare feet are your personal choice of dress?

I've only ran into people who didn't believe me a few times in over ten years of barefooting. Many people are surprised, even a little shocked, but that they really don't believe me doesn't happen often. If they keep asking questions, I keep answering them; 'I don't mind having dirty feet, it comes off when I wash them' or 'No, I'm not cold, I even go barefoot in the snow'. I don't get embarrassed, although sometimes it can get annoying when I'm on the train and wanted to read.

It can be a good idea to make up a business card or something; this shows that it's not just a fad or a one-time thing, and you can put the url of the SBL on there. There's also a whole flyer about going barefoot, which can be found at the url in the source. These are also good to hand out when you're in a hurry and have no time to stop and chat.

Usually I just tell them how great it feels, and that I love going barefoot everywhere.

Sometimes they'll ask where my shoes are, and I use my favorite line: "I've got these. My parents made them for me when I was born." Usually that gets a chuckle out of them. Sometimes I'll carry on and say: "They're always comfortable, and look how well they fit. And they clean up with regular water!"

I've never had anyone react negatively after that.

Keep 'em BARE!

It takes some time to get used to this kind of reaction, to questions like “Where are your shoes, man?”, “Isn’t it cold?” or “Have they stolen your shoes?”, to staring people and school-kids yelling “Look, Jesus!”. Your reply should depend on the WAY somebodie asks: Try to explain the advantages of a barefoot lifestyle if he's genuinely concerned, or resort to a short "why aren't you wearing gloves?" if he's trying to be "funny"!

Lots of people will never get it, because they think there are social norms that require footwear in certain circumstances. It is really none of their business, and you can always tell them it is your personal choice.
