Hello there.

I've just turned 20 a few days ago, and with a new decade ahead of me, I want to really move forward in my life, academically, socially and in terms of motivation. The thing is, I'm just so lazy! I go to work and I work hard, but when at home I'm so unbearably lazy, I can't get anything done.

One of the problems I had was me failing my A-levels as even though I had perfect attendance and always turned in work, I slacked off revision as I felt I lacked direction and motivation. My laid back disposition has caused enough trouble you see.

I know someone is going to think "get off your butt and do something about it!" Thats what I try and do, though it only works in the short term. Anybody have any tips to avoid being lazy for long periods of time?

I'm just too much of a slacker, perhaps my inability to overcome my laziness only proves how lazy I am :P

Anybody got any pointers or advice?

Thanks in advance.

Perhaps you could try and come up with a daily routine for yourself. You're already kind of in one when you say you go to work and stuff. But you should plan out the rest of your day as well; even down to when you take showers, eat, clean, play time etc. This works well for children (not saying you're a child or anything) and it could help break your vicious cycle!

Good luck and congratulations on recognizing your own shortcomings enough that you reach out for help. That's a really good sign!

Most of all, BE DILIGENT! DON'T QUIT WHEN YOU START!

I have two suggestions; however I think your acknowledgment of the problem was your biggest step.

In school everything seems/ed boring to me; now I always try to correlate new subject matter to an interesting discussion, or debate, or connect the subject matter to some sense of wonder or curiosity that is sincere; it helps make the subject matter more tolerable. Do you have a natural sense of curiosity and wonder? If so, I suggest making these mental connections.

Sooner or later (unless you come from wealthy parents) money issues will hit you. The constant need to keep a roof over your head and steaks in the fridge is HIGHLY motivational. College grads make almost twice as much over a life time as non-college grads. So if chilling is what you crave, make a deal with yourself: college degree=easier life.

1. Make a list of jobs you want to get done .
2. set a time ,, for example I'm going to get up at X oclock and do job no. 3 it should take 30 min . And try and do it in 25 ,that will give you extra time ,, ,, to relax
each day cut off another chunk at what ever time you decide on that day ,, always do step 2. each day because that time you selected yesterday won't be good for today and once it's passed your motivator is gone so ,re choose a time ...
always predict job duration 30min. or what ever , and do time yourself ,, not that you should hurry every time , but its nice to know how long it takes to make a pizza for example from the time you inter the kitchen till the time you set back down to the TV or what ever you enjoy...

Try to give yourslef goals every week. Dont use the internet (unless your using it for school) or watch televison until you have completed these goals. You could throw a small party and possibly make some new friends or just go out for a stroll in the nearest park. If you go for a walk everyday, chances are your going to see some of the same peoplle every day and a realatioship might start from there!

Good luck!

I think I would get a doctor's physical and discuss your lack of motivation. It could be you suffer from a mild form of depression. That can cause lack of enthusiasm.
