I had this discussion with a friend of mine in the military. The problem with getting Bin Laden is where he is. Twenty years ago the Soviets invaded Afghanistan. It was a bloodbath, and the Soviet Union ultimately lost. We apparently took it over in a couple of months? No not really. The Russians went after them in the mountainous region where Bin Laden currently is. it's so riddled with caves, and places to hide that it' easy to defend. Helicopters and tanks are easy pickings for anyone with a rocket launcher. We didn't go up there after Bin Laden, because the casualty level would have been too high. If you think the 3500 lives lost so far is high, that is a fraction of what it would cost if we tried to go up into those mountains. The guy is simply not worth that many American soldiers lives, especially if he's limited to hiding in a cave making dumb video tapes. That's why Bin Laden is still free. He is pretty much contained up there. He can't come down into Afghanistan, He can't come down into Pakistan.

I don't think that the "search" is being publicized. What you hear, and what is actually happening, may be very far from each other.
