Eg, re the ‘Axis of Evil’, a bit of education for ignorant Americans:
Iran, being Shia, is fiercely opposed to Al Qaeda.
More importantly, being Persian, the POPULACE has historically been one of the most anti-Arab and PRO-AMERICAN of all the Middle Eastern Muslim nations. This has, however, all changed after they were dismissed as part of the ‘Axis of Evil’.

You mollusks don't understand it do you?
Americans are aware the rest of the world hates them and it gives them a warm feeling of satisfaction, as even the most asleep-at-the-wheel American knows that this hatred is a function of envy and social decline. Oi!
A more interesting question for you propaganda addicted "citizens of the world" would be "how is it that whole generations of you British are so consumed with hatred, particularly for a people, NOT A GOVERNMENT, but a people, who are famously fond of staying home and living their lives far away from the unreliability of your respective cultures?"
Hate destroys the vessel that contains it. It is also an emotion that fills any vacuum in a human being's soul.
Your lost generation is a rather vacuous one-doubtless having something to do with the finality with which the sun has set on modern English culture. "Harry Potter" will make people cringe several generations from now.

What has to be remembered is that most Americans do not travel outside of their own country, this makes them unworldly, they have a very insular existence. In general it seems that they may only ever have their own interests in mind but I suspect the majority of the population are just like us in trying to get by in this life and leave the politics to the power hungry. This does not make them stupid just not interested enough to pressure their government to be any different. However even in the well travelled world of UK citizens much pressure was put on the government to avoid the Iraq war but the politicians did not listen. Does this make us all too stupid to understand the history of our world and know that the ugliness of war has never resolved any bitter struggle in the greed of man? It seems to me that what ever form of terrorism/war that occurs it only ever impacts on the poor general population who end up as "war toys" or victims of and for the power mad whether it is Bush or Bin Laden or any other power mad person.

Two issues here: everyday Americans' perceptions, and American leaders' perceptions.
The former really do not understand the formula you laid out. They have been frightened by a non-stop barrage of security warnings, and brainwashed by flag-waving and speeches about freedom. If your only source of news is the US TV networks, you are bound to learn very little about the outside world. It's really easy to demonstrate this: just watch CNN's round-the-clock coverage of some celebrity scandal while European networks are talking about real news in, say, Indonesia.
As for American leaders, I believe those with the most power understand your formula completely. They use it to their advantage to manipulate and rule, and, ultimately, to try to carve up the world to suit their Project for a New American Century.

If you were to judge by comments here, I'd have to say "Yes." It amazes me how often the response here to any problem abroad is "drop some bombs on them." It's like a kid who tells her mom "I hate you," and the mom keeps beating her to try to get her to change her mind.
On the other hand, the US government's approval ratings at home are at historic lows, and all the polls indicate that they will be taking a drastic change of course n the next election, so maybe Americans are smarter than we think.

No, actually we do understand it. The problem is...short of us all converting to Islam and otherwise kissing Muslim butts, how do Muslim radicals ever come around to NOT hating Americans? Our way of life represents everything they hate...and I for one...don't intend to go away quietly.

There are many Americans who are concerned about all this. Do not put all Americans in the same camp. I think a lot of us aren't sure what do do.

Yep, I really think they believe that the rest of the world is grateful for their self-serving, hypocritical military intervention over the past half-century. I don't think Americans even comprehend that a majority of the world's population actively hates them.
