Is there a thermostat setting, perhaps warm, warmer hot or similar? This sometimes controls the auger speed.

Sounds like the auger has a jamb. You can remove the auger usually there is a mounting plate with Four nut holding it in place. Remove those and it will slide out. Youll have to take the motor off first should be a set screw to loosen and it will slide off. Oh ya unplug first.
