There are 193 members. Almost all sovereign nations are now members. Vatican(Holy See) and Palestine are not full fledged members but these have observer status in the UN.

the palestinian authority, the vatican, and the smom (order of malta, an order of knights that have their headquarters in rome-not in malta) have an observer status (just as switzerland until it became a member a few years ago).
taiwan used to be a member and it represented the whole of china some years after world war 2, but then the peoples republic of china took its place.
